I am 19 years old and currently studying Illustration at Syracuse University in NY. I’m not sure if you are familiar with upstate NY, but this place is pretty boring, and definitely not inspiring. My classes focus on techniques that I have already learned back when I was younger, and the professors only praise my work instead of giving me constructive criticism. My work is almost always “glorified” by my peers and professors, and I am confused.
I am not by any means arrogant, but it seems as though the students at my school lack severely in basic technique and have no concept behind their artwork. I really want to see the portfolios these kids submitted to get into this unorganized, mediocre art program.
But who am I to talk shit? I’m a student at this “mediocre” department. I don’t know why I came to Syracuse.
I was expecting to learn from my peers and professors, but Syracuse University has only stopped my creative groove. Now that I think about it, it has been almost 7 months since I have locked myself in a room and created art or was inspired; it has also been about 7 months since I came to Syracuse.
When I realized I wasn’t being productive with my personal art work, I thought I was being lazy and it was all my fault. Well, yes, it is my fault that I fucked up in high school and couldn’t get into a better university with a “solid” group of staff and students in the art dept. But I slowly came to realization that Syracuse University and the city of Syracuse are fucking me over!
Weather: cold + snowy = some sort of depression
City of Syracuse: you know…nothing to do
Syracuse University: GRΣΣK or die
Despite the fact that 99% of my time attending Syracuse was/is/will be pretty shitty, I did meet some cool people that I think I will keep in touch for a long time.
Will Azcona: probably one of the funniest, most eloquent, intelligent people I have ever met. And might I add one of the cutest (no homo) teehee. He’ll definitely call me a faggot for posting this whole thing, but I think he’ll get over it.
Alice Plati: The warmest girl on the planet. Keeps it real 24/7. And and an AMAZING photographer.
Kevin Kim: The male version of A-Plat with little artistic ability. Regardless, he is the homie.
Everyone on Sadler6: Craziest, yet the nicest group of motherfuckers.
Mara Tuccio: The girl that made Syracuse just a tad bit more tolerable. Funny, sometimes awkward, open-minded, independent, and insightful. But above all, loveable.
As I near the end of my freshman year in college….I still fucking hate Syracuse. However, I don’t regret coming here one bit. I met some of the coolest and most down to earth people. And most importantly, I learned a lot about myself. I learned that I can be someone’s boyfriend. I learned that I love honey mustard with bbq sauce. I also learned that “life is the art of drawing without an eraser.”
See you in a few weeks LA!
